Volunteer with Rucksacks & Ridgebacks

Drivers, buddies, event hands, dog helpers, VPW awareness, community hosts, merch & logistics — many roles keep Community, Camaraderie, and Companionship moving. Pick what fits you. Driver and sensitive roles complete official license / background steps with the proper authorities.

Important: Rucksacks & Ridgebacks does not replace government agencies. For driver (and other sensitive) roles, driver’s license status and criminal history checks are completed on official state DMV/DPS and FBI / authorized channeler websites. After you finish, return here and send confirmation numbers so we can clear you. Many non-driving roles need only an application and a quick onboarding chat.

How volunteering works

  1. Pick your role(s) — apply below with area, availability, and how you want to help.
  2. Screening as needed — drivers (and some sensitive roles) complete official DL + background steps.
  3. Report confirmations — if required, submit confirmation / case IDs on this page (use numbers, not full SSN or full DL images).
  4. Onboarding — we review and plug you into the right list (rides, events, Battle Buddies, VPW, dogs, etc.).
  5. Serve the 3 C’s — Community, Camaraderie, Companionship in real life and online.

Crisis transport is not a substitute for 911. If someone is in immediate danger, call emergency services. Mental health crisis: 988 (Veterans: 988 then Press 1).

Authority · Driver licensing

Driver’s license verification

Confirm your license is valid, current, and correct class for passenger transport in your state. Use your state motor vehicle / public safety agency — not third-party lookalikes.

What to do

  • Open your state DMV / DPS official site
  • Verify license status / renew if needed
  • Confirm you are legally allowed to drive passengers
  • Note any confirmation or receipt number
  • Return here and submit the confirmation form
Authority · Criminal history

Background check

Drivers and other sensitive volunteer roles complete an Identity History Summary (often called a “rap sheet”) through the FBI electronic system, or another process we specify for your state. This is handled by the FBI / authorized channels — not by RNR servers.

What to do

  • Start an FBI Identity History Summary request
  • Follow fingerprint instructions from the official site
  • Pay any government fees on the official portal
  • Keep your confirmation / tracking information
  • Submit confirmation details to RNR below

Note: An Identity History Summary obtained for personal review has specific legal uses. RNR may also require a channeler or state check for volunteer screening — we will email you if additional steps apply.

Volunteer application

Sent securely to Rnrbacks@gmail.com. Free to apply. Select every role you’re open to — driver fields appear if you pick transport.

Driver details

Required only if you selected Driver / transport.

Submit driver’s license confirmation to RNR

After you finish on your state DMV/DPS site, send us the confirmation details (not a full scan of your license unless we email a secure request).

Open USA.gov state DMV finder

Submit background check confirmation to RNR

After starting or completing your check on the FBI CJIS EDO (or authorized process), send confirmation here.
